Pizza is the favorite food of many people worldwide. It may seem like an indulgent treat, rich of carbs and fats, however, according to many studies, pizza is not only delicious but it is also good for health.
Indeed, a well made pizza is the best example of Mediterranean diet; based on simplicity and quality.
As a matter of fact, less the ingredients and higher their quality, healthier your pizza will be!
So how should a good pizza be for your health?
According to Francesco Sofi, associate professor in the department of Food Sciences in the University of Florence and medical director at SOD Clinical Nutrition in the Hospital-University of Careggi, from a medical standpoint, pizza contains high standard of nutritional values.
It is a complete food, healthy and genuine; it keeps inside three basic macronutrients: carbohydrate, protein and fat.

Pizza is model of Mediterranean diet
Not only it contains all the basic nutrients, but they are also found in the right percentage.
The caloric intake of a classic Margherita (tomato and mozzarella cheese) lies between 700 and 750 calories.
The main sources of nutritions are complex carbohydrates of flour (65%), fat and proteins of mozzarella cheese (15/20%), vitamins and minerals contained in tomato.
In addition, let’s not forget olive oil rich in good fats.
Clearly, if you add more ingredients on your pizza, such as sausages or extra cheese, the nutritional values and the calories will change.
For all this reasons doctors tend more and more often to replace with pizza a meal basted on carbohydrate such as a first course of pasta with beans (with a high level of proteins and biological values) or a dessert.
